Quartz Slabs and Countertops at A Granite M.D.

Next to granite, quartz countertops are one of the most popular options for countertops. They are engineered to be strong and durable, and they come in all colors and patterns as well. But what exactly are quartz countertops and why are they one of the most popular kitchen countertop options?

What is a Quartz Countertop?

Quartz countertops are engineered countertops made from about 95% natural quartz crystals and 5% resin binders. This combination makes it more flexible for kitchen remodeling, though it still remains as strong as granite countertops. Another element of quartz countertops is that they can be engineered in a specific color that even natural stone can’t have.

Properties

Quartz countertops are very unique as they are mostly made up of natural stone but are engineered at the same time: it keeps the amazing benefits of both natural and manmade properties.

  • Durable – When it comes to strength and the ability to withstand chipping and scratches, quartz countertops are considerably strong. Though not exactly immune to damage, they are still pretty durable.
  • Low Maintenance – The resin binding provides a great impermeable surface that not only makes these countertops moisture, stain and water resistant; it also makes it less likely for bacteria to accumulate and it is very easy just to wipe it clean.
  • Countless Design Options – Quartz Countertops offer a wider range of colors and patterns than its natural stone counterparts since they can be manufactured to have different sizes of quartz crystals with different colors mixed in the resin.
  • Color Consistent– Since quartz countertops are manufactured with specific colors, it is very easy finding quartz with uniform colors and patterns in the market than matching the different varying designs of granites and marbles.
  • Flexible – The resin that binds the quartz crystals in these countertops makes it more flexible, lighter, and easier to cut and install. It can also be finished with a polished shiny surface or a honed finish.

With all the positive properties of quartz countertops, it does have a few disadvantages. The most notable being it made of resin, it is not as heat resistant as its natural stone alternatives and it may change color with continuous exposure to direct sunlight overtime.

An Excellent Countertop Material

Though it has its minor drawbacks, those are nothing that proper caring can prevent. After all, quartz countertops are engineered to withstand everyday kitchen activities. It is as durable as its natural stone counterparts, and much lighter, flexible, and easier to install; and it’s easy to clean, low maintenance, and has unique colors and designs as well.
